Has TikTok been banned in the U.S.?

TikTok was briefly banned in America on the 19th of January at 12am EST, due to the ongoing concerns that the U.S. government have with the security of the app. The app was banned for a total of 12 hours before President Trump announced that he was working with ByteDance (TikTok’s owner company) to agree a 50% ownership of TikTok. This means that the app is now back for American users and there is a 90-day extension to allow time for TikTok and the U.S. government to come to an agreement.

If you want to get clued up on why the ban came into place and what you can do to avoid it affecting your UK business, keep reading!

Why Is a TikTok Ban on the Cards?

The U.S. governmentโ€™s main concern with the use of TikTok is regarding the security and privacy of data. With TikTokโ€™s parent company, ByeDance, being based in China, critics are worried about the potential for user data to be accessed by foreign entities.

Whilst TikTok have denied these claims and argued that the ban violates its users’ First Amendment, in early December a federal appeals court ruled that national security concerns outweigh that. Which leaves the ban still on the cards.

At this time, TikTok are still planning to appeal, however if this isnโ€™t successful and no one opts in to buy the platform, the U.S. could be looking at saying goodbye to the app as early as January 19th.

How Could This Affect UK Businesses?

You might be thinking, well Iโ€™m a national business based in the UK so the TikTok ban doesnโ€™t affect me. Wellโ€ฆ that might not be so true. Whilst you might not have firsthand impacts, there are ways this ban could change the performance of your digital marketing and itโ€™s important to know how.

1. Reduced Global Reach

If the TikTok ban in the U.S. goes ahead, your global reach could be impacted. Many viral trends and creators originate from the U.S., and their absence could affect the platformโ€™s content performance and user engagement worldwide, including in the UK.

2. Impact on Marketing Strategies

UK businesses targeting U.S. audiences will face immediate challenges. TikTok ads and influencer partnerships with U.S.-based creators will no longer be viable, pushing brands to seek alternative platforms.

3. Changing User Behaviours

A ban could signal a shift in how users perceive social media platforms, prioritising privacy and data security. This might lead to broader shifts in digital marketing strategies, even outside the U.S.

4. Changing Algorithms and Social Media Platforms

Itโ€™s no secret that TikTok is the big dog of social media marketing right now. It caused huge platforms to redesign their algorithms and layout. With less of a user base and the above impacts, we could see people shifting their time into other platforms and ultimately, other content and algorithms.

What Can UK Businesses Do to Prepare?

Donโ€™t worry too much, weโ€™ve put together some actionable steps to future-proof your marketing strategies:

1. Diversify Your Social Media Presence

Donโ€™t put all your eggs in one basket. While TikTok is undoubtedly influential, platforms like Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and maybe even emerging apps like Threads or BlueSky offer alternative ways to connect with audiences. Ensure youโ€™re maintaining a strong presence across multiple channels.

2. Focus on Owned Media

Invest in platforms you control, like your website, email lists, and blog content. By creating valuable, SEO-optimised content, you can maintain audience engagement regardless of shifts in social media trends.

3. Build Long-Term Influencer Relationships

If influencers are a core part of your strategy, consider working with creators who have a presence on multiple platforms. This ensures your campaigns remain flexible if TikTokโ€™s availability changes.
