marketing resources

Some of the most unforgettable campaigns ever created didn’t come from a big budget or a perfectly polished ad. They started with a big idea, a bold move, and the confidence to do something completely unexpected.

We’re talking about guerrilla marketing. No, not the kind where you stick someone in a gorilla suit, but when creative brilliance meets a bit of chaos. The kind that gets people talking, asking questions and snapping pictures.

So, What Actually Is Guerrilla Marketing?

The term was coined back in the 1980s by marketer Jay Conrad Levinson, and the concept is brilliantly simple: instead of outspending the big brands, you outsmart them.

The name itself comes from guerrilla warfare, the idea of using surprise, creativity and quick thinking rather than sheer resources to make an impact. In marketing terms, that means creating unexpected moments that stop people in their tracks, spark conversations, and gets people sharing.

Guerilla Marketing should be something completely impossible to ignore.

Guerrilla Marketing Campaigns That Absolutely Nailed It

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping – Mystery Installations

Before the release of The Hunger Games prequel, something beautifully strange started appearing in cities around the world.

Giant floral installations. Mockingjays. Snakes. Massive blooms.

These striking installations appeared overnight in places like New York City, Milan and Bangkok, with no explanation, just a small cryptic quote from the book. For those who have read the book, they know, these beautiful installations symbolised the arena of the Games (without giving away spoilers).

Many also believed these installations were a message, and with no word from the capitol (aka Lionsgate), fans took matters into their own hands. Tagging locations, sharing theories and doing detective work across social media to decode what it all meant.

And considering the already powerful marketing behind The Hunger Games, this campaign was the cherry on top

McDonald’s Zebra Crossing Fries

McDonald’s took something as mundane as a zebra crossing and turned it into a giant portion of fries spilling out of their iconic red box. And what was even better, these fries led straight to the restaurant itself.

There was no big media push. No overthinking. Just a simple, clever visual that made people stop, smile and immediately reach for their … and maybe grab a cheeky McDonald’s while they were at it.

The campaign quickly flooded social media, proving you don’t need a billboard to promote your business.

IT Movie – The Red Balloon

To promote the release of IT, a single red balloon was tied to a drain in Sydney with a handwritten note that read: “It is closer than you think. #ITMOVIE in cinemas September 7.”

That’s it. No big reveal, just a perfectly placed idea that tapped straight into people’s fear… and curiosity.  The image went viral within hours, with people sharing it across social media because it made them feel like they were in on something.

This campaign is the perfect example of when audiences connect the dots themselves, they don’t just consume your campaign, they become part of it.

Why Marketers Should Be Paying Attention

It Generates Real UGC

User-generated content is one of the most powerful tools in a marketer’s kit, and guerrilla marketing creates it naturally. When you put something visually striking or emotionally compelling in the real world, people stop and take photos. They post. They tag. They share. And suddenly you’re reaching audiences you’d never have found through your usual social channels.

It Reaches People You Won’t Find on Social Media

Not everyone is reachable through a targeted ad campaign. But everyone walks down a high street, uses a crossing, or passes through a city centre. Guerrilla marketing meets people where they are, in the real world.

It Makes People Talk (So You Don’t Have To)

The best guerrilla campaigns are deliberately light on explanation. There’s intrigue, a little confusion, maybe a cryptic message, and that gap is exactly what makes people lean in on. They ask questions and pull other people in to help them figure it out. The campaign does the talking long after the moment has passed.

What Makes a Great Guerrilla Campaign?

The best ones tend to share a few things in common:

  • They’re unexpected — they appear where people aren’t looking for marketing
  • There’s little explanation — the less you spell it out, the more memorable it becomes
  • They create a feeling — curiosity, joy, nostalgia, a little bit of unease, emotion is what drives sharing
  • They’re visually compelling — if it’s worth stopping for, it’s worth photographing
  • They invite participation — whether that’s figuring out a mystery or snapping a picture, the audience becomes part of the story

Guerrilla marketing campaigns generate, on average, three times more impressions than traditional outdoor advertising.

The reason isn’t magic. It’s surprise. People share things that break their expectations. They walk past things that confirm them.
